A closer look

In January 2026, heavy rain triggered deadly landslides on New Zealand's North Island, including one at a busy campground. ABC News asked climate scientist Kevin Trenberth and emergency management expert Lauren Vinnell to explain how landslides happen, the warning signs to watch for, where they are most common, and how climate change is increasing the risk.
