A closer look
In 2021, the world's oceans were hotter than ever recorded, even though surface air temperatures ranked only fifth or sixth warmest. In an interview, climate scientist Kevin Trenberth, a coauthor of a 2022 study by 23 researchers at 14 institutes, explained why ocean heat is a better measure of global warming and how it supercharged storms, floods, heat waves, and wildfires.
